Art Classes for Toddlers in NYC

Little girl with green paint on her fingertips in an orange t-shirt that says "I made a mess at summer camp" at Messy Sensory Art Class for Kids in NYC

Mess it Up is more than just an art class for toddlers. We combine sensory play, science concepts, and messy process-oriented art to give your child a hands-on experience. This class will develop independence, decision-making skills, and creativity.

Classes include teacher-directed free play to allow all children to learn in their own way, as well as an optional story and ‘project.’ There are always alternative options available for children who choose to “go their own way.” This art class is for active and curious toddlers. Sitting is never required or expected of this age group!

FAQ about Mess it Up

What is sensory art?

In our sensory art classes, children will be introduced to materials like paint, ink, clay, and multimedia and use a variety of tools. At Kids at Work, we love mess! Sensory art allows for hands-on, messy use of art materials. The focus will be on child-lead exploration as they follow their interests and natural curiosity. Our curriculum also includes gross and fine motor development through movement and art. Our sensory art curriculum changes each week so returning children get the opportunity to continuously try new things!

Do I get to take home my child’s art?

During Mess it Up, we will complete a project at the end of class. Typically this project is something that each child can take home, but sometimes we will create a large collaborative work with no “product”. At Kids at Work, we engage in a process-based curriculum, with the focus being on discovery and exploration rather than producing something specific.

What happens in Mess it Up?

The children will enter the space and have multiple options for child-lead (and messy!) sensory art. They will explore the room for half of the class and engage in the sensory art offerings. Then, we will transition to read a book and all come together at a community table for project. The projects will vary each week and encourage creativity and process over a specific product outcome!

Do I need to be present for drop in classes?

Yes! Mess it Up is an adult-child cooperative class.

What is the class size?

MESS IT UP features TWO Teachers with a max of TEN Children.

How are objects, materials, and instruments sanitized between classes?

All objects and instruments that the children come into contact are sanitized in the following manner between classes, thanks to our wonderful teaching staff:  1/  Wiped down with child-safe soapy water and microfiber cloth AND 2/  Sprayed with department of health approved “food surface safe” sanitizer spray which contains .29% bleach.  3/  Left to air dry for a 3 minute virus “kill time”.  All large motor objects and foam mats are also cleaned in the same manner between classes.  Our classroom floors and easel area are dust mopped and wet mopped between every single class.   Walls and doors are cleaned and sanitized bi-weekly. Why do we use a solution containing bleach?  Our bleach solution, which contains only .29% bleach, is the same solution that restaurants use to sanitize surfaces that food comes into contact with.  Sanitizers marketed towards babies such as babyganics or honest brand do NOT kill viruses such as COVID, RSV, flu etc.  We learned a lot about sanitizing during COVID, when we were open throughout fall 2020 and all of 2021-2022.  Since our objects come into contact with multiple babies per day, our sanitizer is the safest way to keep your baby (and all adults) healthy.  You are more than welcome to grab a wipe and wipe off any excess sanitizer before your baby comes into contact with any of our objects!  All objects are dry when they come into contact with students.
