A Baby Music Class in session in NYC

Jam Session Babies, introduces fun and interesting musical activities to the youngest music makers and the people who love them. Our baby music classes in NYC will inspire your child’s neurological development and introduce them to a social environment.

This baby music class is taught by a professional singer-guitarist who is also trained in early childhood music. You and your baby can experience music in a low-stress, relaxed atmosphere based upon improvisation. That means that mistakes and questions are welcome!

Our goal in Jam Sessions is not to perform; it is to create a musical atmosphere for our little ones through communal involvement. You’ll never see amplification in any of our music classes at Kids at Work.

Studies have shown that exposing your baby to live music-making involving a trusted caregiver can speed up the process of your child learning to understand language and speak, and can help your baby master complex language concepts faster.

Music is the only subject matter where adults can witness a baby’s concrete reaction such as moving arms and legs to approximate the beat, smiling in response to a well-loved familiar song, and rocking back and forth. Babies may coo, smile, and giggle, especially when the music stops. They may also coo in a way that matches the pitch of the music, especially at the end of songs.

Jam Sessions Class FAQs

Do I need to be present for class?

Yes. Kids at Work NYC classes and activities for babies require adult participation.

This music class is a relaxing class led by a professional singer-guitarist trained to work with the youngest children and their accompanying adults.

How old does my baby need to be to enjoy music classes?

Our music classes are best for babies starting at 2 months of age. We recommend social activities after your baby has received their first round of complete vaccinations. The earlier you begin introducing music to your baby, the earlier you will find their interest piqued! While most babies aren’t reacting to music in more concrete ways until 5-6 months, be sure that your baby is “downloading” during these first few weeks. Attending classes with your baby or having a nanny take your baby to classes also provides you with an adult community and models the community setting for all babies.

Do you use amplified sound in baby music classes?

No, we use no amplified sound in our music classes.

What kind of songs/music are explored in this class?

At Kids at Work NYC, we value material that is “off the beaten path.” This includes songs you may not have heard before. We also choose material that is in different tonalities, including minor keys and various “foreign sounding” modes as well.

Our musicians vary their set lists! Set lists include:

  • songs without guitar
  • songs with guitar
  • songs with no pitch (“chants”)
  • call and response
  • songs with small fine motor movement
  • story-songs
  • songs with large movement – everyone is encouraged to get up and move either with their baby OR without!

Before our goodbye song, our teachers prepare a “jam song” which includes many different types of high quality instruments for the babies to enjoy, and for grown-ups to sing along.

Teachers also may slot in parachute activities, pitched chimes, our drum collection, our huge gathering drum, and even bubbles! While each baby music class contains the same general routine and flow, the material varies completely from week to week!

What instruments are used in baby music class?

The music teachers at Kids at Work are accomplished singer-guitarists. Guitar is always included in our baby music class!

During class, we also use 100% silk scarves, egg shakers, pitched chimes, drums, rhythm sticks, and a large collection of mixed instruments.  All of the instruments used in baby music classes are of the highest quality, and are completely sanitized between classes.

How are instruments sanitized between classes?

Musical instruments are hand washed using soapy water and a clean cloth between each class. Additionally, they are sprayed clean with a “food surface safe” sanitizer between each class. Instruments are air dried so that our sanitizer has time to do its work!  Scarves are hand washed between each class.
